The basics / BOTERLY GUIDES

Grok Bot skills vs. routines: what is the difference?

Understand the building blocks before automating a task.

THE SHORT ANSWER

A skill describes how to perform a task. A routine tells a Bot when to run a workflow. A template provides a starting configuration that another person can review and add as a copy.

A skill is a repeatable method

A useful skill records the required inputs, steps, checks, expected output and boundaries. For a daily briefing, it might explain which sources to read, how to cite them and what to do when no new information is available.

Start with a real one-time task, review the result and improve the method before saving or reusing it.

A routine determines when work runs

A routine belongs to a Bot and can run a workflow on a schedule or, where supported, after an event. For a briefing, decide the time zone, frequency, source and where the result should appear. Inspect its status and run history.

An automated run performs real work and may consume usage. Keep it small and require human approval for consequential external actions.

A template is a starting point

An author can share a Bot’s configuration so another user can add their own copy. Review what is actually included and connect any services yourself. The copy is not automatically the author’s computer or account.

Memory holds lasting context or preferences; it is not the same as a scheduled routine. Review any imported context before relying on it.
