Why does my Grok Bot say "Bot failed to respond"?

Last checked October 28, 2026 · Grok Bot changes often

Short answer

"Bot failed to respond — Something went wrong while generating the reply" has mostly been a temporary issue on the platform side. Resend the message first. If every Bot fails, check the official forum for an ongoing incident; you do not need to reset your computer or reinstall. If it keeps happening, report the time and the conversation ID.

What it usually means

On the official forum, "Bot failed to respond" threads appeared in waves (late August, early September and early October 2026). In each case staff resolved it on their side and told users their Bots and history were fine.

What to do

  1. Resend the message. Staff said this is enough once the incident is over.
  2. Check one other Bot. If every Bot fails, it is almost certainly not your setup.
  3. Do not reset or reinstall to fix this error. One forum thread is titled "failed to respond on every bot after Reset" — the reset did not help and added recovery work.
  4. If only one Bot fails and others work, that Bot's runner may be stuck. Report it with the conversation ID.

Get the conversation ID

Right-click the Bot in the sidebar → Copy conversation ID. Include it, the approximate time with time zone, and the app version when you report.

If the Bot is not failing but stuck

A Bot that shows as working but never finishes may be waiting for you: an approval card, a login, a CAPTCHA or a secret request. Open its computer view and check. Send "Stop now" if the work should end. If your usage pool is exhausted or a spending limit is reached, work also pauses — check the usage view.
