How do I start a fresh conversation with the same Grok Bot?
Last checked October 28, 2026 · Grok Bot changes often
Click the + button at the top of the sidebar (not the + in the message box, which only attaches files) and choose the Bot you want. You get a new conversation with the same Bot. Its profile, memory, skills and routines carry over; only the chat history starts empty, which makes each turn much cheaper.
Where the button is
Many people assume each Bot is one endless conversation. It does not have to be.
- Click + at the top of the sidebar, or press
Cmd/Ctrl+N. - In New chat, pick the existing Bot.
- Give it the task.
The + at the bottom of the message box is different: it only offers attachments and Teach a task. Several forum users mixed the two up.
What carries over and what does not
| New chat with same Bot | Duplicate the Bot | |
|---|---|---|
| Profile and instructions | Yes | Yes |
| Memory | Yes | No |
| Skills and routines | Yes | Yes |
| Old transcript | No | No |
A new chat is almost always what you want. Duplicating creates a separate Bot that does not keep learned memory, which surprised users who deleted the original afterwards.
Do I need to delete the old giant chat?
No. A chat only costs usage when you send a new message in it, because that is when its history is re-read. Leave old chats alone or hide them. Deleting them changes nothing about usage and removes the record.
When to start fresh
- At the start of each new task or topic.
- When the usage row for a simple reply is mostly cache reads.
- After a long back-and-forth that is no longer relevant.
If the Bot needs context from the old chat, ask it for a short handoff summary first and paste that into the new chat.
