Can I compact or reset a Grok Bot's context?

Last checked October 28, 2026 · Grok Bot changes often

Short answer

Not directly. As of October 2026 Grok Bot has no manual "compact" or "new session" control; long conversations are only auto-summarised when they approach the model's limit. The practical reset is a new chat with the same Bot, which keeps its profile, memory, skills and routines. Reset chat and Duplicate also exist, but Reset chat is destructive and a duplicate does not keep the Bot's memory.

Why people ask

Every turn re-sends a chat's full transcript to the model. Teams running several specialist Bots reported 200,000–250,000 input tokens per reply on long-lived coordinator Bots. A compact button is one of the most requested features on the official forum; staff said it is tracked with no timeline.

For most people the first row is the answer. See How do I start a fresh conversation?

A safe handoff routine

  1. Ask the Bot: "Write a 10-line handoff summary of what matters from this chat."
  2. Make sure lasting rules live in the Bot's memory or profile, not just in chat. Ask it to remember them explicitly.
  3. Open a new chat with the same Bot and paste the summary.
  4. Leave the old chat. Hide it if it clutters the sidebar; do not delete until you are sure.

Things to know

  • Staff noted that a Bot's saved memory is placed in context every turn, but only the newest few thousand characters of it. A long, ever-growing rule list pushes old rules out. Ask the Bot to merge its rules into one short list now and then.
  • Duplicate was removed from the right-click menu in at least one Windows release; the docs describe it on iPhone.
