Grok Bot template skills are missing after import. How do I fix it?

Last checked October 28, 2026 · Grok Bot changes often

Short answer

It is a known bug: since August 29, 2026 the official forum has tracked templates whose preview shows skills but whose imported Bot has an empty skill list, and users still reported it on October 19. The preview text cannot be selected, so staff suggest screenshotting each skill and asking the new Bot to recreate it exactly. A setup prompt is another approach, but Boterly has not tested its setup kits on a live Bot; check that each skill was created.

What is going on

A user reproduced it in a round trip with their own template: the preview listed the skill with its full body, but the imported Bot's manifest contained "skills": []. Instructions, memories, routines and plugin references arrived; skills did not. Staff confirmed it was not intended and is tracked. It briefly worked around September 3, then broke again; reports continued through October 19, 2026.

It is easy to miss because the desktop details pane no longer shows instructions, so you may not notice what came across.

Check your imported Bot

  • Type / in the composer to list available skills, or
  • Open Marketplace / Connect apps (Cmd+Shift+M) → your installed plugins and skills → Private skills.

Compare with the template preview.

Fix it

Recreate from the preview (staff workaround). The preview's content field cannot be selected or copied, so:

  1. Screenshot each skill in the template preview, scrolling through long ones.
  2. Send the screenshots to the new Bot: "Create a skill named X with exactly this content."
  3. Read the result — it is working from images.

Try a setup prompt instead. A setup prompt asks the new Bot to create its skills without importing a template. Boterly has not yet tested its setup kits on a live Bot, so check whether every skill was created. See How do I install a Grok Bot template?

If you publish templates

Ship the skill text alongside the share link — in a README, a kit file, or as a setup prompt — so people can recover when import drops it.
