How do I install a Grok Bot template?

Last checked October 28, 2026 · Grok Bot changes often

Short answer

There are two ways. Official: open the template's x.ai share link, choose Add to Grok Bot, review what is included and choose Add Bot to create your own copy. Setup prompt: create a new Bot and paste a setup message that tells it to create its own rules, skills and paused routines. Either way, check that skills arrived, connect plugins yourself, and run one small task before turning routines on.

  1. Open the template link (it looks like x.ai/bot/…) and choose Add to Grok Bot.
  2. Review the context and integrations it includes.
  3. Choose Add Bot. This creates a separate copy on your account.
  4. Reinstall the included plugins with your own accounts. Set up anything excluded — custom MCP servers, scripts, API keys — from the author's instructions.

In the Marketplace inside the app, choose Add on a Bot, or open it and choose Import Bot.

Known issue: since late August 2026 the official forum has tracked a bug where the template preview shows skills but the imported Bot has none. As of October 19 users still reported it. After importing, open the Bot's skills and compare against the preview. See Template skills are missing after import.

Option B: a setup prompt (how Boterly templates install)

  1. Click + at the top of the sidebar → Create new Bot.
  2. Paste the template's setup prompt as the first message.
  3. Ask the Bot for a checklist, then verify that the rules, skills and paused routines were created. Boterly has not yet tested its setup kits on a live Bot.
  4. Give it the first-run inputs it asks for.

This approach does not use template import, but the requested setup may still need manual work. Every Boterly template has a Copy setup prompt button and a downloadable kit.

After installing, every time

  • Skills: are they all there? Type / to see them.
  • Plugins: connect them with the account you intend. Never paste passwords in chat.
  • Routines: imported routines arrive paused. Check owner, schedule and time zone before enabling.
  • Approvals: add Ask first rules in Settings → General → Auto-review for anything the Bot must not do alone — send, delete, pay.
  • First run: a small, low-risk task with an output you can check.

A template is a starting configuration, not a copy of the author's computer, logins or history. Treat third-party templates like software you did not write.
