Why does my Grok Bot ignore the rules I gave it?

Last checked October 28, 2026 · Grok Bot changes often

Short answer

Rules are guidance unless something enforces them. Staff explained that only the newest few thousand characters of a Bot's saved memory are placed in its context each turn, so a long, growing rule list pushes old rules out of view; rules kept in files are only seen when the Bot opens that file. Keep a short merged rule list in each Bot's own memory, restate the required method in each handoff, and use Auto-review "Ask first" rules for anything a Bot must never do alone.

How a Bot sees your rules

From staff answers in October 2026:

  • Memory you ask a Bot to save goes into its context every turn — but only the newest few thousand characters. Old rules fall out as new ones pile up.
  • Shared memory (facts saved about you) is visible to all your Bots; a rule saved in one Bot's memory is not.
  • Rule files on the Bot's computer are seen only when a Bot actually opens them. Nothing loads them automatically.
  • Router Bots do not automatically check a specialist's result against your rules.

Fixes, in order of strength

  1. Auto-review "Ask first". Settings → General → Auto-review. For send, delete, pay, publish or big jobs. It actually pauses the action.
  2. Short rule list in each Bot's own memory. Ask the specialist, in its own chat, to remember the rule. Every so often: "Merge your saved rules into one short list."
  3. Put the method in the handoff. A coordinator should write it into the task: "use the scraper, not the browser".
  4. Profile, not chat. Core instructions belong in the Bot's profile so they carry into every new chat.
  5. Fresh chats. Long transcripts dilute instructions; start a new chat per task.

A quick check

Ask the Bot: "List the rules you currently follow, newest first." If a rule is missing, it is out of view — re-save it and merge the list.
